St. Mary Parishioner Laura Vinson-Garvey won the incredibly prestigious
Nonprofit Individual of the Year Award at the annual Public Service Recognition
Ceremony that was held on Friday, June 18th at the Burney Center Ballroom on the
UNCW Campus. This annual event is sponsored by the UNCW MPA Program, the
Southeastern North Carolina Chapter of the American Society of Public
Administration, and the Quality Enhancement for Nonprofit Organizations.
Laura received this award for her work in leading the new St. Mary Dental
Clinic, a clinic that has become the “gold standard” for free dental clinics of
North Carolina. Laura, the Director of the clinic, is also one of the
co-founders of the St. Mary Dental Clinic along with Oral Surgeons Dr. John
Hickory and Dr. Doug DeGroot. Laura beat out three other nominees for the award—Catrecia
McCoy Bowman (SE Center for Mental Health); George Edwards (Wilmington Historic
Foundation); and Mary Ann Lama (Domestic Violence Shelter & Services.)
Laura, a Mexican-American from Texas, is married to Darrel and has two children,
William and Cheyenne. Her parents, immigrants from the State of Nuevo Leon in
Mexico, were always devoted to helping those less fortunate than themselves.
Laura learned this lesson well.
Today the St. Mary Dental Clinic is open three days one week and four the next
week. It often sees 40 patients per day.
Congratulations, Laura! You are a model of stewardship to us all!
Governor
Perdue has named St. Mary Parishioner Yvonne Pagan to be a member of the
Governor’s Advisory Council on Hispanic/Latino Affairs to represent our region.
The mission of this Council is to “Be the eyes of North Carolina, the ears of
North Carolina, the heart of North Carolina to do the things we must do as a
people for Latino and Hispanic issues.” This photo shows Yvonne being sworn in
on May 19, 2010 by Judge Albert Díaz.
