Parish Info
| Our Mission |
The community of St. Mary’s is a vibrant and dynamic
post-Vatican II parish of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Raleigh. With the
Eucharist as the source and summit of our spirituality, and inspired by the
Holy Spirit, we seek to worship God and build up the Kingdom of God in the
Greater Wilmington, NC area. The parish of St. Mary prides itself on serving
the poor, providing superb Catholic Christian education for the young,
championing human rights for all people, and serving as a loving home to the
stranger, especially the immigrant. Recognizing our call to spread the Good
News of Jesus Christ beyond our own area, St. Mary’s sends lay missionaries
to serve in the United States, Mexico, and other foreign lands. |
| History | In
a sense the diocese of Raleigh has had two origins. The first was
Wilmington, which when James Gibbons was bishop in 1868, called Wilmington
"Mother of the North Carolina Diocese." The
expectation was that this port city on the Cape Fear River would someday be
the seat of a new diocese. For this reason the building of Saint Mary
Pro-Cathedral began in 1908 and was finished in 1912. |
